Installing a network card and a sound card

1. The network card and the sound card are already placed on the PCI buses on the mother board.
2. Plug the twin cable to the network card and to the socket on the wall or on the floor.

3. Start the computer and follow how Windows 98 finds the new devices and installs the required drivers. This time Windows 98 finds the drivers but sometimes it may need the installation disc or the driver disc from the manufaturer of the device.
4. When the computer asks for username and password press esc.
5. The computer automatically finds network settings by using the DHCP server. You can check it the network connection works by starting Internet Explorer. If you are networking a computer in an environment where there is no DHCP server, you have to put in all required information to the network settings. Read last year's exercises for more information on that.

Windows Update

Windows Update is where you can and where you have to pick the updates for your operating system and software. The updates are to fix bugs and especially security problems.

1. Start Windows Update Start|Windows Update
2. Select Product Updates
3. Select Critical Updates Package from the list. You can select Show Individual Updates to take a closer look on the updates in the package. There are several other updates on the list but this time you can ignore them for saving some time. But install all essential updates to your own computer!
4. Select Download
5. Select Start Download
6. Wait until the installation is done.
7. Restart the computer when the installation program asks you to.

Installing software

Some are afraid of installing software for imaginary reasons. Modern installation programs are simple and easy to use.

1. Install the following programs from the CD-ROM from the Utilizing Information Networks course:
   1. Winzip (E:\compression\winzip)
   2. Zonealarm firewall program (E:\security\zonalm26.exe)
   3. Mozilla browser (E:\www\selaimet\mozilla\mozilla-win32-0.9.4-installer.exe)
   4. OpenOffice (E:\OpenOffice\setup.exe)
2. Start Windows Explorer. Put the CD-ROM in and search the programs. Start installation by double cliking the installation file. Install the programs in the above given order.

Cleaning the computer for the next group

The C: drive of the demonstration computer is a so called image which means its contents are cloned to a file on the D: drive. By using this file it is easy to put the C: drive back as it was in the beginning of the exercise.

By deleting programmes you cannot get to the same situation. Security updates are not even possible to delete.

1. Select Start|Shutdown|Restart in MS-DOS-mode
2. Go to drive D:
3. Start restpart.exe
4. Write backup2.img to File and select OK
5. Select drive C: as the drive where to put image
6. Answer YES to the warning
7. It takes a bit more than three minutes to write the image.

The software package for making a clone of the drive is called Savepart.
