Completing the course with essays
A collection of essays and other additional tasks (summaries,
uml tasks and other writings) can be substituted for exam.
Completion method is primarily intended for distance learning
students and others who do not have time or can not participate in
the exam. Note that the tasks are typically more demanding compared to
those in exams, and require a course book and other
reference material. Note that the assignment is carried out
normally in addition to essays.
Register to the essay group "Laboratory work" at
Korppi. Since the tasks are given from the start of the course
deadline for registration is
26.3., If you have registered to the essay group but want to
complete the course by essay instead, please unregister from the
group.
Tasks
The course is divided into four periods; related to each period
a personal task is given at Korppi. You have 2-3 weeks time to
complete the tasks after the lectures related to the task. The
tasks are returned using NettiDemoWWW before the
deadline (the answers are collected automatically on Mondays at 12). Please use demo numbers
11-14 to separate essays
from exercises (1. essay returned as "exercise" 11, etc). Unlike in
exercises students do not see each other's answers - points and
feedback are given at Korppi.
The tasks are carried out
independently - direct copying or plagiarism of other
materials, or working the tasks in groups is prohibited. Using
reference materials (books, scientific publications, www material)
is allowed, but they have to bee cited appropriately (author and
publication information, or www link). In case of problems you can
ask about relevant references directly from the lecturer.
The formats used to return the tasks are the same as in course project. The recommended length
is about 600 words (+ / - 200 words, depending on the subject and
task type - for example, in a task centered on UML, a few commented
diagrams may be sufficient), total printed length should be 2-3 A4
pages/task.
Grades
Tasks are graded using the same scale as in exams, 0-6p. Pass
threshold is 12 points.
Even if you decide to complete the course with essays, you may
still do the exam (the best grade is counted). However, you must
register for essays at the start of the course, because tasks are
given and checked as the course progresses using a fixed
schedule.
