Solving hardware problems
Exercise 5

When installing new hard- and software all kinds of problems tend to appear. One needs knowledge and skills to solve the problems. There is plenty of information about bugs in programs and devices on different FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) pages. The producers of hard -and software commonly have some sort of FAQs. If FAQs are not of help with the problem, try for example newsgroups <URL: http://groups.google.com/> or other places on the Internet <URL: http://appro.mit.jyu.fi/haku/> .

Some problems are presented below. Find solutions for the problems. Start on the web site of the manufacturer or Microsoft. It is best to use the search engine on the page, so think of succinct search phrases!

1. An installed USB device just doesn't work. Operating system is Windows 98. What to do?
2. When copying a program- or music CD in Windows 98, the Autorun program may start. That can stop the burning of the CD. How to deal with the autorun problem when using CD-R or CD-RW drives by HP?
3. What do you have to check if you have problems with HP CD-Writer Plus 8100? The check list is in the FAQ of the device.
4. When converting the file system in Windows 98 to FAT32 one can get an error message: "Not enough memory to convert the drive to FAT32". What to do?

10. Your computer does not start and the display stays dark. What are the different possible causes?
11. HP ScanJet 3300C causes the error "Undefined Program Error 2117". How to fix that?
12. What does it mean when the computer constantly beeps when starting it? The computer has an Award BIOS.
13. A computer with ABIT BH6 mother board and IBM DTTA-371010 hard disc boots itself every now and then or gets totally stuck especially when trying to start Windows. What might be the reason?
